Musician’s Friend

Nestled on the Missouri River bottoms along 210 Highway in North Kansas City, Musician’s Friend is a 702,000 square foot distribution facility dedicated to direct consumer shipping of musical gear, 7 days a week.

Musician’s Friend is an industrial property that takes pride in having nice looking grounds. Signature has maintained the 70 acre property since 2007. In addition to turf care, there are many trees, shrubs and a few flower beds. An expansive irrigation system maintains most of the property.

“As a Maintenance Manager, I take a lot of pride in the way our facility looks, and Signature Landscape has been instrumental in the grounds portion of this. Our lawn is mowed and trimmed on a regular schedule and the weed control in the lawn as well as the parking lot islands sets the standard for grounds maintenance,” said Tony Dummermuth, Maintenance Manager for Musician’s Friend.

Musician’s Friend isn’t without its challenges. Large water retention basins border the property on the north and west and a smaller retention pond sits on the southwest corner. While the basins are necessary to control water runoff, a fluctuation in rainfall creates challenges when it comes to maintaining these areas. Not enough rain exposes soil, allowing for erosion to take place during heavy rains. Building a berm, installing rip rap and slit fencing have helped to slow the flow of water to the problem areas.

Sitting on the river bottoms creates some problems with the absorption of water into the ground. In the past, standing water has killed the grass in areas. Signature has worked to repair the damage and prevent any future damage.

Water isn’t the only challenge at Musician’s Friend. Winter precipitation causes problems for the 24/7 operation. During snow storms, the facility hours of operation present a challenge to the snow removal crews.

“Signature Winter Services has always done an excellent job partnering with us to keep our parking areas clear and safe as well as clearing the truck parking and dock areas to keep our facility running,” said Dummermuth.
