Lance Schelhammer - Branch Manager

Landscape Industry Since: 1992
Signature Landscape Since: 2023
Lance Schelhammer grew up in Lenexa, Kansas, after his family relocated from Mason City, Iowa. His upbringing was deeply rooted in the commercial landscape maintenance industry, as his parents founded Grass-Roots, Inc. in 1978. From a young age, he was immersed in the business, gaining hands-on experience in various roles before officially joining full-time in 2000 as Human Resources/Account Manager. By 2003, he had transitioned into overseeing day-to-day operations, continuing to build on the company’s strong foundation until its sale in 2008.
Following the sale, Lance spent over a decade with The Brickman Group (now BrightView), initially in local sales before moving into national contract operations. One of the most impactful roles of his career was serving as a Market Manager, where he oversaw services across multiple states, managing subcontractors, diverse customer needs, and varying climate conditions. The experience taught him how to function successfully within a large corporation with minimal direct oversight. It also reinforced the importance of self-motivation, accountability, structured processes, and strong communication—skills that have carried through every stage of his career.
Since joining Signature, Lance has embraced the company’s strong culture and team-driven environment. His leadership and industry expertise led him to take on the role of Branch Manager in Kansas City, Kansas, where he works alongside a motivated group of professionals. He finds fulfillment in the challenges of the green industry, particularly in adapting to the ever-changing impact of weather on landscape management. His early interest in meteorology still influences his approach, as he understands the importance of being versatile and adjusting strategies to ensure both quality results and financial success.
Returning to the industry has reaffirmed his professional identity, shaped by years of experience and the mentorship of his father. He believes in the value of listening, learning, and continuously evolving, and he’s grateful to be part of a team that shares his dedication to excellence.
Outside of work, Lance finds the greatest fulfillment in being a father to his three children, Isabel, Luke, and Lauren, and a supportive partner to Rebecca. He also cherishes his role in Rylee’s life as their families blend together. He enjoys golfing, hunting, fishing, and supporting K-State and Kansas City sports. Much of his free time is spent at the soccer field or baseball diamond, cheering on his kids in their athletic endeavors.
